About the Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus were bred for one purpose: to be the perfect companion. Originating in ancient China where they were treasured by emperors, these small, sturdy dogs are all about love and loyalty. They're gentle, outgoing, and adapt beautifully to any living situation. Unlike many small breeds, Shih Tzus are not yappy or nervous — they're confident, friendly, and endlessly charming.
Shih Tzus have one of the longest histories of any breed — they've been companion dogs for over 1,000 years, treasured in Chinese imperial courts. Today they've lost none of that charm. Their gorgeous double coat can be kept long and silky or trimmed into an easy-maintenance "puppy cut." They love meeting new people, rarely meet a stranger, and are as happy in a New York apartment as they are in a Texas ranch house.

Care & Grooming
Their luxurious double coat requires daily brushing if kept long, or easy maintenance in a "puppy cut." They need moderate exercise — short daily walks are perfect. Shih Tzus are sensitive to heat, so keep them cool in summer. Their eyes and ears need regular cleaning.
Health Notes
Generally long-lived and healthy. Common issues include eye problems (due to their large eyes) and brachycephalic traits. Regular dental care is essential.
🐾 Fun Fact
Shih Tzu literally means "Lion Dog" in Mandarin. Despite their lion-like name and regal history, their favorite activity is snuggling on the couch with their favorite human.
